Compound Board Game

Description

Creating a board game rather than the usual digital game was a surprisingly complex process, with the focus being shifted towards how mechanics effect the amount of fun players have playing a more simple game.

Game balance also played a large part in translating the survival horror genre onto a game board. With the final game pitching four players up against randomly spawning enemies in a co-operative survival game.

Design Challenges

The main issue was game balance, with players attempting to survive and complete objectives before they are overrun. Players would die and ‘respawn’ if they are on the same square as an alien at any point. Therefore, movement speed values as well as what additional tools to give to players were both important in the design of the game. With playtests being conducted and lots of feedback gathered, eventually the balance between player abilities and enemy spawns created many fun and entertaining games.
